.

An indie video game refers to games typically created by individuals or smaller development teams without the financial support of a large publisher, in contrast to most triple-A games. The term can also refer to games financed by publishers who do not exert significant creative control on the developers. Because of this particularity, indie games often focus on innovation and taking risks not usually afforded in triple-A games.

Even though the indie game industry is as old as the 70's. (even knowing a small resurgence in 1990's.) This specific fringe of the market really started to expand in the 2000's, principally by the availability of internet distribution, bypassing the need for physical retail. Allowing semi-professional teams, or even standalone developers to experiment with new gameplay mechanics and to publish their own games. Some of these games even had the benefit of being freeware.

Famous exemples of indie games include titles such as Cave Story,Spelunky,Braid, Super Meat Boy and Fez. Of course, the horror genre had a few influential titles of it's own, especially in the 2010's with the popularisation of "let's play" videos, with games of varying quality such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent and slender.

Feel free to complet the list but avoid putting "asset-flips", fan-games, and mods.
